  This place is an oasis in a vast food desert.
  
  The ambiance is pretty awful, and it looks terrible from the outside... but Balch's consistently serves up some really good, fresh seafood.
  
  My recommendation is to get the broiled scallops. It's a generous portion, perfectly prepared. Of course, a lot depends on the flavor of the fresh scallops, which is a variable they can't control for. Some batches are delicious, some are just pretty good.
  
  The fried seafood is really good, too, as you'd hope to find at a Fish Fry. I'm not crazy about the side dishes here. They aren't bad, but they aren't good either. They just sort of sit next to the meal and keep it company, while inspiring no particular feelings one way or the other.
  
  The staff is nice, service is pretty quick, and for the area, you really can't do better.
